How to Comfortably Survive a Long Flight During Your Period
Long flights are a true test of endurance, especially if you’re dealing with your period at the same time. But don't worry! Modern airplanes are equipped with restrooms, and the right hygiene products will help you feel a lot more at ease.
Preparing for the Flight
Step 1. Choose an Aisle Seat.

When booking your seat, prefer those located by the aisle. You'll likely need to get up for the restroom every hour or two, and an aisle seat means you won’t have to disturb other passengers.
- If you can't book an aisle seat, don’t panic. You may need to ask your neighbor to let you pass, but remember, your health is more important. Politely explain the situation, and it should go smoothly.
Step 2. Bring a Variety of Hygiene Products.

Make sure you pack enough different hygiene products. If you typically use tampons or a menstrual cup, don’t forget to bring pads as a backup. This will help prevent any mishaps with stains.
- Also, don’t forget to pack hand sanitizer. There may not be soap and water available onboard, so it’s better to be prepared.
- Include a hand moisturizer as airplane soap can be very drying on your skin.
Step 3. Pack a Spare Pair of Pants.

Don’t forget to pack a clean pair of pants. They can be very useful in case of any accidents.
- If an incident occurs, try to quickly rinse the stain in the sink and place the pants in a bag.
- If you don’t have a large bag handy, carefully fold the pants so that the stains are on the inside and place them at the bottom of your bag.
Step 4. Wear Comfortable Clothing.

Choosing the right clothing matters. A long flight can be uncomfortable even without your period, so opt for lightweight and comfortable items like sweatpants or loose-fitting trousers that don’t restrict movement.
- Dress in layers. The temperature on airplanes can be unpredictable, so it’s wise to bring something warm like a sweatshirt or a light jacket.
- Don’t forget about spare underwear. If it gets soiled, you can change it and wash it in the sink.
- Pack warm socks and, if you plan to sleep, earplugs and an eye mask.
Step 5. Bring Ziplock Bags.

Ziplock bags can come in handy if the trash bin is full. Wrap used products in toilet paper and dispose of them when you get the chance.
- If you don’t want to put used products in a bag, you can dispose of them in the bag located in the seat pocket. Later, ask the flight attendant where you can properly dispose of it.
Step 6. Pack All Hygiene Products in One Bag.

Gather all necessary products in a small bag or toiletry case. This will make them easier to access during the flight, as the restrooms onboard are quite small.
- If you don’t have a small bag, just carry them in your hands. Menstruation is a natural process, and there’s no need to be embarrassed.
Step 7. Don’t Forget Intimate Wet Wipes.

Wet wipes can help you freshen up during your period. They can be especially useful in case of heavy flow.
- You can also use baby wipes or simply wet toilet paper. Be careful not to flush them down the toilet as they can cause clogs.
Step 8. Don’t Forget Pain Relievers.

If you experience cramps or back pain, make sure to bring some pain relief medication. This will help make your flight more bearable.
- Remember to only take the recommended dose!
Actions Onboard
Step 1. Visit the Restroom Regularly.

Be sure to check your hygiene products every few hours. If you’re using pads, it’s best to check every 2-4 hours, while tampons should be changed every 1-2 hours if you have a heavy flow.
- Don’t forget that tampons need to be changed every 6-8 hours to avoid the risk of toxic shock syndrome. Choose them according to your flow.
- If the restroom is occupied, don’t hesitate to wait or check another one if there are multiple. It’s always good to stretch your legs anyway.
Step 2. Wash Your Hands.

Before touching your intimate area, be sure to wash your hands. This helps prevent infections and protects your health.
- If you have hand sanitizer, make sure to use it as well.
- Always wash your hands after using the restroom, even if they seem clean.
Step 3. Change Your Hygiene Product.

When it’s time to change your product, do so without hesitation. Wrap the used tampon or pad in toilet paper and dispose of it in the trash bin. For menstrual cups, simply empty it into the toilet and rinse it under water.
Step 4. Don’t Flush Products Down the Toilet.

Never flush used products down the toilet, whether on the plane or in any other restroom. This can lead to clogs.
Step 5. Clean Up After Yourself.

Try to keep things tidy. If blood accidentally gets on the surface, don’t leave it. It’s not only unpleasant but can also raise concerns among other passengers.
Step 6. Stay Hydrated.

Make sure you’re drinking enough fluids. Bring a water bottle to avoid dehydration, as the air on airplanes is very dry.
- This will also encourage you to visit the restroom more often, which is beneficial since you’ll need to check and change your products.
- Don’t try to carry water through security, as you might be forced to dispose of it.
Comfortable Flight
Step 1. Find Ways to Distract Yourself.

Flights can be boring, so prepare some entertainment. Bring a book, tablet, or laptop to watch movies.
- Many long-haul flights have screens in the seats, but don’t rely on that. Prepare alternative options.
- Try to take a nap. While many find it difficult, a few hours of sleep can help you recharge.
Step 2. Recline Your Seat.

If you’re on a long or overnight flight, don’t hesitate to recline your seat. It’s normal for long flights.
- Keep in mind that this might affect the passenger behind you. Recline only as far back as won’t disturb them.
Step 3. Bring a Travel Pillow.

A travel pillow can be helpful even if you don’t plan to sleep. It can help you get comfortable.
Step 4. Don’t Forget Snacks.

While food will be offered onboard, it’s often not the tastiest. Fruits like oranges and bananas can help you feel better during your period.
- Don’t forget to pack something sweet in case you want to treat yourself.
Step 5. Drink Tea or Coffee.

Tea and coffee can help alleviate menstrual symptoms. Many airlines offer these for free, so don’t hesitate to ask.
Step 6. Use a Heating Pad.

A heating pad can help relax your muscles and ease pain. You can place it on your abdomen or back.
- There are special heating pads for menstrual cramps that can be worn under clothing. You can put it on before your flight or in the airport restroom.
