Babies are delicate yet resilient. By learning the right way to lift a baby, you can avoid straining them or your back. The proper approach will vary depending on whether the baby is lying down or being held by someone else.

Lifting a Lying Baby

Step 1. Check if the baby is on a smooth surface that allows for easy sliding.

Step 1

Determine if the baby is on a smooth enough surface that you can gently slide them. It’s best to move the baby closer to you to avoid straining from bending and lifting. If the baby is on a soft surface, slide your hands under their body and neck, bringing them closer to you.

Step 2. Support the neck and head with one hand.

Step 2

Support the neck and head with one hand while using the other to support the bottom and spine. Ensure that your hands are securely positioned under the baby.

Step 3. Bend your knees and lift the baby.

Step 3

Bend your knees and lift the baby into your arms. At this stage, you can slide your lower hand under the baby along their bottom, spine, neck, and head as you cradle them in your arm.

  • By bending your knees to lift the baby, you will strain your back less than if you bend over them.
  • To lift the baby vertically towards your body, simply raise them while continuing to support their head and neck when they are upright.

Step 4. Practice this procedure.

Step 4

Practice this procedure. Once you feel comfortable, you can start lifting the baby by supporting the back of their body with one hand right from the start, allowing you to pull them in closer immediately.
