Creating vibrant patterns on t-shirts and other clothing items using the tie-dye technique is not only enjoyable but also simple! You can easily make your own batik paint using readily available materials. Just dissolve fabric paint in water, or choose ingredients from your kitchen, as even food coloring works great!
Using Fabric Paint
Step 1: Fill the Spray Bottle with Water.

Take a spray bottle and fill it with water. You can find such bottles at any hardware store or supermarket. Fill it with about 250 ml of water, leaving some space for adding paint.
Step 2: Add the Paint.

Add the desired color of fabric paint to the bottle. You will need about three tablespoons (60–70 g) of paint.
- If you want a lighter color, you can reduce the amount of paint. For pastel shades, 1–2 tablespoons will be sufficient.
Step 3: Shake the Bottle Well.

Shake the bottle vigorously to mix the components. Shake for 30–60 seconds until you achieve a uniform mixture.
- Make sure the cap is tightly closed before you begin shaking to avoid spilling paint on your hands or clothes.
Using an Active Solution and Paint
Step 1: Wear Protective Gear.

Before you start working with the active solution, put on safety glasses and gloves. This is important for your safety. It’s also recommended to wear long-sleeved clothing for added protection.
Step 2: Prepare the Active Solution.

To create the active solution, you will need urea, ludigol (sodium 3-nitrobenzenesulfonate), and a water softener. These components can be found online or at craft stores. In a bucket, mix 1 liter of warm water with 180 g of urea, 10 g of ludigol, and 5 g of water softener.
- If you need more solution, simply increase the quantities of the ingredients while maintaining the ratios: for every 1 liter of water, use 180 g of urea, 10 g of ludigol, and 5 g of water softener.
Step 3: Add the Paint.

Once the active solution is ready, pour it into a container. Then add paint to achieve your desired color.
- The exact amount of paint depends on how deep a shade you want. The more paint you use, the darker the color will be. For example, 3 cups (700 ml) of red paint will yield a rich red color, while 1 cup (230 ml) will give a lighter shade.
Using Food Coloring
Step 1: Prepare an Apron.

When working with food coloring, protect your clothes by wearing an apron. If you don’t have an apron, you can use old clothing.
Step 2: Mix Water and Coloring in a Bottle.

Fill a plastic bottle with a tight-sealing cap with half a cup (120 ml) of water and add 8 drops of food coloring.
- For a lighter shade, you can reduce the amount of coloring, for example, to 4 drops.
Step 3: Shake the Bottle to Mix.

To mix the ingredients, gently shake the bottle. Make sure the cap is on tightly to avoid a mess. Shake until you achieve a bright and uniform color. Now you have paint ready for your tie-dye projects!
