Bokkens are key instruments in several martial arts, including kobudo and aikido. In this article, we will go through the process of handcrafting one. While your sword may not be perfect, its uniqueness will reflect that it was made by hand.
Part 1
Step 1. Tools You'll Need:

You will need a hammer and a chisel (used together), sandpaper, a planer, and a metal rasp.
Step 2. Find a Suitable Hardwood Branch; choose only live trees.

Select a suitable branch from a live hardwood tree. Do not use fallen branches, as they are not suitable for practical use. If the tree is not yours, be sure to get permission to cut it. Allow the branch to dry for a month in a warm, well-ventilated space.
Step 3. Prepare the Surface with the Chisel.

Use the chisel to work on the surface. If the wood cracks around a knot, work on only one side. Then, carefully chisel away the knot from both sides and smooth it out with the planer. Don't worry about chisel marks—bokkens are not meant for display.
Step 4. A Rounded "Blade" is Suitable for Training.

Shape a rounded form for the "blade." Create a flat spine that should have clear edges forming an angle of about 150 degrees. The length of the sword and the shape of the tip are up to you.
Step 5. Shape the Handle into an Oval; Length Depends on Your Preference.

Make the handle oval; its length also depends on your preferences. Different martial arts require different proportions between the blade and handle. Create the oval shape using the planer.
Step 6. Finish the Process by Sanding Down All Rough Edges.

Complete your work by thoroughly sanding all surfaces. Start with the rasp and finish with the finest sandpaper.
Step 7. Apply a Clear Acrylic Varnish, Spraying Evenly Over the Surface and Allowing It to Dry Completely.

Apply the acrylic varnish by spraying it evenly on the surface, and leave it to dry. It’s very simple!
