Part 1
Step 1. Read and Listen:
Start with reading and listening: Learning to read in Russian using the Cyrillic alphabet is not hard. Don’t begin your studies with the alphabet or sounds. Does learning your alphabet (saying it out loud) help you speak English? No. Start with simple words in dialogues where the ideas are clear.
Step 2. Start Typing in Russian:
Begin learning to type in Russian: You can actually learn this quite quickly. In about two hours, with a good method, your fingers will know the keyboard. Your mind may not, but your fingers will! Just keep practicing, and your speed will gradually increase. It’s best to start right now so that you're typing at the same level you're learning the language. For example: --- Что это? (What's this?) --- Что? (What?) --- Это. (This.) --- Это книга. (That's a book.)
Step 3. Speak Russian:
Speak Russian: Use simple Russian dialogues with audio readings and speak aloud, mimicking everything you hear. Just focus on reproducing the same sounds. Since it can often be difficult for beginners to hear the differences, it’s better if you have a teacher who can help point out the details and master the sounds. But with good audio files and practice, you can actually manage well on your own. Practice in private or rely on lessons.
Step 4. Practice Every Day:
Practice every day: It’s better to spend 10 minutes three times a day consistently. Engage in reading, listening, and speaking practice. Learning a language is really more like training for a sport or music and requires physical practice, not just memorization.
Step 5. Ditch the Flashcards:
Ditch the flashcards: They really aren’t very effective. Just follow the steps above, and you will physically practice speaking Russian on your own, without having to consciously focus on memorizing everything. It will simply happen 'automatically'.
Step 6. Have Fun!
Have fun! Seriously, being able to speak a foreign language is fun, so learning should also be enjoyable. Have fun with it. Learn little expressions like "Что, что?" that people say when they didn’t hear what you said. In English, we typically say: "Sorry?" or "What was that?" or politely "Pardon me?"
