Step 1: Remove Rust from Cast Iron.
Start by removing rust from the cast iron surface. A wire brush works well for this. If there's a lot of rust, you might consider using sandblasting equipment or chemical treatments, but be cautious of potential damage to the cast iron.

Step 2: Remove Old Paint.
Strip off the existing coating using sanding or other methods. This is quite straightforward. Collect and dispose of the flaking paint you have removed.
Step 3: Clean the Cast Iron from Contaminants.
Thoroughly clean the cast iron. Remove dirt, dust, stains, and other contaminants, including cobwebs. A brush may be necessary for this task.
Step 4: Wear Old Clothes Before Painting.
Before you start painting, put on old clothes that you won't mind discarding after the job is done.
Step 5: Prepare the Painting Area.
Choose an outdoor area or a well-ventilated space for painting. Lay down a tarp or use a table to catch any paint drips.
Step 6: Keep a Cloth and Paint Thinner Handy.
Having a clean cloth and paint thinner on hand is a good idea. The cloth will help clean paint off your hands, while the paint thinner is useful for cleaning tools and thinning paint after you're done painting.
Step 7: Apply Primer.
For uncoated cast iron, use an oil-based primer. Follow the instructions on the package and allow the primer to dry before applying the next layer.
Step 8: Apply Oil-Based Paint.
When applying oil-based paint, dip your brush about 1/4 inch (0.63 cm) into the paint to avoid splattering. Apply two coats of paint, waiting 24 hours after the first coat before applying the second.
