Plywood can quickly lose its appeal without proper maintenance. Cracks in the surface are often irreparable, and dirt can accumulate, making it hard to restore its original look. However, with the right preparation, you can paint plywood to make it shine again! Let's walk through the process.

Step 1: Repair any defects in the plywood.
Start by fixing any damage on the plywood. Use wood glue to secure the plywood to the desired surface. Unfortunately, cracks or missing pieces cannot be repaired. You will need to remove the damaged sections and glue a new piece of plywood in their place.
Step 2: Clean the surface with hot water to remove grease and grime.
Clean the plywood with hot water to get rid of grease and dirt. A simple solution with a few drops of detergent will work well. Avoid over-saturating the surface. If the plywood is cracked or has missing parts, address these issues first, as there may be MDF underneath that can be damaged by moisture.
Step 3: Dry the plywood thoroughly.
Make sure the plywood is completely dry. Lightly sand it (don’t overdo it) and use a tack cloth to remove all dust particles. It’s also a good idea to wipe down the area around the painting surface; otherwise, dust may settle onto the fresh paint.
Step 4: Apply primer.
Begin applying primer. A great choice is Kilz brand. Apply at least two coats of primer and let it dry for 24 hours. You may need to sand the surface after each coat of primer for a smoother finish.
Step 5: Apply paint:
When painting, use two coats for lighter shades and typically more coats for darker colors.
Step 6: Finish with a topcoat - 2-4 layers of varnish if the plywood will be used as a working surface.
