How to Easily Insert the Degree Symbol on Any Device

In this guide, you'll learn how to input the degree symbol (°) on computers and mobile devices across various applications and documents.

Windows

Step 1. Open the Start Menu

Click on the Windows logo located at the bottom left corner of your screen.

Step 2. Type "Character Map" in the search bar

In the search bar, type the word "character map". This will launch the Character Map search.

Step 3. Open the Character Map

Click on the Character Map icon that appears at the top of the Start Menu. A window with available symbols will open.

Step 4. Ensure "Advanced View" is checked

Make sure the checkbox next to the "Advanced View" option is checked. If it is already checked, you can skip this step.

Step 5. Find the degree symbol

In the "Search" box, type "degree sign" and click the "Search" button. The degree symbol will appear in the window.

  • If you simply open the Character Map, the degree symbol will be in the sixth row.

Step 6. Double-click the degree symbol

Double-click on the degree symbol located in the upper left corner of the window.

Step 7. Click "Copy"

Click the "Copy" button located to the right of the "For copying" label.

Step 8. Open a text document, email, or social media message

Place your cursor where you want the symbol and press Ctrl+V to paste the degree symbol.

Step 10. Use a keyboard shortcut

If you have a numeric keypad, do the following:

  • Hold down the Alt key on the right;
  • Type 248 or 0176;
  • Release the Alt key;
  • If it doesn’t work, try enabling the numeric keypad by pressing Num ⇩.

Mac OS X

Step 1. Click in the desired location for the degree symbol

Open the application or document where you want to add the degree symbol and click in the text field.

Step 2. Open the Edit menu

Find the "Edit" menu at the top of the screen.

Step 3. Select "Emoji & Symbols"

Click on the "Emoji & Symbols" option at the bottom of the menu. The Symbols panel will open.

Step 4. Switch to the Punctuation tab

Select the "Punctuation" tab in the Symbols panel. If the tab is not visible, click the "Expand" button in the upper right corner.

Step 5. Find the degree symbol

The degree symbol is located on the third row, next to the "^" symbol. If you need the large degree symbol, it is located on the right.

Step 6. Double-click the degree symbol

Double-click the degree symbol, and it will be added to the text.

To insert the degree symbol, press ⌥ Option + ⇧ Shift + 8.

iPhone/iPad

Step 1. Open an app with the on-screen keyboard

Launch an app where you can use the on-screen keyboard and switch to the required layout.

Tap the text field where you want the degree symbol to appear. The on-screen keyboard will appear.

Tap the 123 button in the lower left corner of the keyboard to switch to the numeric layout.

Step 4. Hold the "0" key

Press and hold the "0" key. A menu with symbols will pop up.

  • On iPhone 6S and newer, do not press too hard to avoid triggering the "3D Touch" feature.

Step 5. Select the degree symbol

Swipe your finger across the screen to highlight the degree symbol, then release your finger to insert it into the text.

Android Device

Step 1. Open an app with the on-screen keyboard

Launch an app with the on-screen keyboard. The degree symbol is available in the symbols layout.

Tap the text field where you want the degree symbol to appear. The on-screen keyboard will open.

Tap the ?123 or ?1☺ button at the bottom of the keyboard to open the number and symbol keyboard.

Most Android devices have two symbol layouts. Tap the button with mathematical symbols to open the second layout.

  • On some devices, you may need to tap the ">" button to access another layout.

Step 5. Find the button with the degree symbol

Tap the button with the degree symbol to insert it into the text field.

If the degree symbol is not available on the on-screen keyboard, do the following:

  • Press and hold the "°" symbol;
  • In the pop-up menu, select "Copy";
  • Tap the text field and select "Paste".
