One of the simplest and most effective ways to save money is to reuse paint rollers instead of purchasing new ones every time you want to paint. Although the cleaning process may seem a bit labor-intensive, it’s well worth it and helps reduce environmental impact. Follow these steps to recycle and reuse your paint rollers.

Step 1: Remove Excess Paint on Unwanted Surfaces.
Remove excess paint from the roller onto an unwanted surface. As you finish your project or workday, try to use up as much paint on the roller as possible. The less paint that remains, the easier the subsequent cleaning will be. Apply the excess paint onto newspaper, cardboard, or any other unwanted surface.
Step 2: Clean the Roller from Paint.
Clean the roller from paint. Different types of paints (latex and oil-based) require different cleaning methods.

For latex paint, use soapy water. Submerge the roller in a bucket of soapy water, swish it around, and squeeze out the excess paint with your hands. Drain the water and refill the bucket, repeating the process until the water runs clear.

For oil-based paints, use a solvent. Wear gloves and pour the solvent into a clean tray. Roll the paint roller in the solvent several times. Once the roller is nearly clean, place it in warm soapy water for a final clean and reuse.
Step 3: Hang the Roller to Dry.
Hang the roller to dry. Cut one side of a standard clothes hanger. Slide the roller through the bottom of the hanger and let it dry. This drying method helps maintain the nap in good condition, ensuring an even paint application next time. A roller with matted nap can paint unevenly.
Step 4: Store the Dried Roller in a Ziplock Bag.
Store the dried roller in a ziplock bag. Place the roller in a large storage bag and seal it. If you don’t have a large bag, use a grocery bag and tie it closed. By sealing or tying the bag, you protect the roller from dust and dirt, allowing you to use it again in the future without extra effort.
