Plastic containers are convenient and practical solutions for food storage. However, they can sometimes emit less-than-pleasant odors. The reasons can vary: it might be the material itself or food remnants that left their mark. The smells from the food can be quite persistent. Fortunately, there are numerous ways to eliminate them. You can use liquid soap, vinegar, baking soda, and other absorbent substances. With a little effort, you can restore freshness to your containers. Keep reading to find out how.
Using Soap and Water
Step 1. Remove Food Residues.

First, clear the container of any leftover food. If the odor is coming from the food, make sure to thoroughly remove all remnants. If you face difficulties, you can use a spatula or another tool. It’s also a good idea to pour warm water into the container to make the process easier.
- Make sure to remove any grease and oil. Even after removing food remnants, there may still be a greasy film on the walls of the container. To remove it, use a paper towel to soak up any excess oil or grease.[1] X Source
Step 2. Soak the Container in Soap Solution.

Fill the sink or a large bowl with warm water and add dishwashing detergent, then soak the container. This will help get rid of the most stubborn odors. Leave it in the solution for about half an hour.
- If the odor persists even after soaking, use a brush to scrub the container thoroughly.
Step 3. Dry the Container.

After soaking, take the container out and rinse it with clean water. Then, dry it with a cloth or paper towel. Now check if you’ve managed to eliminate the odor. EXPERT TIP: If the smell remains, sprinkle a little baking soda inside the container, leave it for a few minutes, and then wash it again.
Step 4. Place the Container in the Dishwasher.

Check if your container is dishwasher safe. If it is, place it in the dishwasher and run the wash cycle. The high temperature will help eliminate any lingering odors if the previous steps didn't work.
- Place the container on the top rack to avoid deformation.
Using Vinegar and Baking Soda
Step 1. Prepare the Solution.

If the previous steps didn't work, prepare a powerful solution of vinegar and baking soda. In a large bowl, pour in a cup of white vinegar and add ¼ cup of baking soda, mixing thoroughly.
Step 2. Submerge the Container in the Solution.

Place the container in the bowl with the prepared solution and add water to completely cover the container. Mix well.
Step 3. Soak the Container.

Leave the container in the solution for 24-48 hours. This solution will effectively eliminate any unpleasant odor.
Step 4. Place the Container in the Dishwasher.

After soaking, place the container in the dishwasher. Be aware that a strong vinegar smell might linger, so it’s best to wash the container immediately after using the solution.
- If you don’t have a dishwasher, simply rinse the container thoroughly in soapy water.
Absorbing and Masking Odors
Step 1. Use Salt to Eliminate Odors.

If previous methods didn’t work, try using substances that can absorb odors. Salt is one such remedy. Place a pinch of salt in the container, cover it, and leave it overnight. Don’t forget to remove the salt before using the container.
Step 2. Use Crumpled Newspaper.

Crumpled newspaper can also help absorb odors. Tear off a few sheets, crumple them up, and place them inside the container, leaving them for 24-48 hours.
- Remember to wash the container after removing the newspaper, as it may get dirty.
Step 3. Use Coffee Grounds.

Coffee grounds are excellent at absorbing unpleasant odors. Using the grounds from your morning coffee, place them in the container, cover it, and leave it for a day. EXPERT TIP: You can also try adding a bit of lemon or orange peel.
Step 4. Place the Container in the Sun.

Put the container, without the lid, under direct sunlight. The sun is effective at eliminating odors. If you can’t place the container outside, set it on a sunny windowsill.
Step 5. Use Vanilla Extract.

Vanilla extract has a pleasant aroma that can mask undesirable smells. Add a bit of water and a few drops of the extract to the container, then cover it. You can also use a cloth soaked in vanilla extract, leaving it inside for several hours.
