In Hindu yoga philosophy, chakras are invisible energy centers within the human body, and blockages in these areas can be linked to physical and emotional issues. To clear your chakras, follow this meditation using a Western adaptation of the chakra system.

Part 1

Step 1. Learn About Your Chakras.

Step 1

Learn about your chakras. Chakras are often compared to disks that are horizontally aligned within the body and spine. They correspond to various glands in the body and their hormones, leading some teachings to state that there are actually more than seven chakras, corresponding to the number of glands in the human body. Each chakra has so many attributes that it's impossible to list them all here, so here's a brief overview:

  • Crown Chakra (Pituitary): at the top of the head, violet color. Consciousness, spirituality.
  • Third Eye Chakra (Pineal gland): forehead, blue-purple color (indigo). Perception, intuition, willpower.
  • Throat Chakra (Thyroid): throat, blue color. Communication, inspiration.
  • Heart Chakra (Thymus): heart area, green color. Love, compassion, healing.
  • Solar Plexus Chakra (Islets of Langerhans, adrenal gland): navel, yellow color. Individuality, power, wisdom.
  • Sacral Chakra (Ovaries, Testes): genitals, orange color. Sexuality, creativity.
  • Root Chakra (Gonads, adrenal medulla): anus, red color. Survival, instinct, stability.

Step 2. Choose a Suitable Environment.

Step 2

Choose a suitable environment. Get comfortable in a room or outdoor space where you won’t be disturbed and where it’s quiet (aside from natural sounds). Turn off your phone and doorbell to avoid interruptions. Make sure your clothing is not too tight or scratchy. Close your eyes to focus on your body.

Step 3. Relax.

Step 3

Relax. Some specialists recommend standing during this meditation, but you can also lie down on a blanket or sit on a cushion. Breathe slowly and deeply, relaxing your muscles.

Step 4. Thoroughly Explore Your Chakras from Bottom to Top.

Step 4

Thoroughly explore your chakras from bottom to top. This is necessary to determine which chakra may be blocked or not functioning properly. Sometimes it’s obvious, but other issues can be associated with different chakras. Always start with the Root Chakra and end with the Crown Chakra, as this represents a transition from the most 'primitive' part of the body (survival) to the most advanced (consciousness).

Step 5. Breathe New Energy into Each Chakra.

Step 5

Breathe new energy into each chakra. Visualize the chakra as a disk or a lotus flower. Inhale and visualize light flowing into the chakra, making it radiate energy. Exhale and imagine all your tension leaving the chakra. Repeat if necessary, then move on to the next chakra.

Step 6. Align Your Chakras.

Step 6

Align your chakras. Simply put, make them rotate clockwise. A chakra that stops rotating or spins in the wrong direction may be associated with physical ailments or deception. One way to align such a chakra is to meditate and visualize it spinning clockwise, correcting the flow of energy in your body.

Step 7. Slowly Return.

Step 7

Slowly return. After energizing the Crown Chakra, continue to breathe deeply. Gently open your eyes and calmly return to your everyday life.
