How to Punch Harder and Faster

A quick and powerful punch is a fundamental skill needed to become a good boxer. Mastering this technique begins with improving your physical condition and learning how to throw punches using not just your hand, but your entire body. By learning how to aim correctly and strike within punching distance, you can add more speed to your punches, and by using training techniques that help you quickly build muscle mass, you can increase your strength. If you're ready to take your punching skills to the next level, let's move on to the first step.

Working on Your Physical Condition

Step 1. Get into the Right Stance.

Step 1

Get into the right stance. The positioning of your feet and legs is crucial for a good punch, as it requires the involvement of your entire body. Place your feet slightly wider than shoulder-width apart to easily pivot toward your target and transfer your weight into the punch.

  • If you're punching with your right hand, your right foot should be slightly back, with its heel lifted.
  • As you punch, your legs should push forward in the direction of the strike. When you throw a strong punch, they shouldn't leave the ground. If you lift your feet, you will lose some of your body weight's contribution, and your punch won't be as strong.

Step 2. Keep Your Eyes on the Target.

Step 2

Keep your eyes on the target. Your focus should remain on your target. Never close your eyes or look away; to aim correctly and deliver a powerful and precise punch, maintain your concentration. Slightly tuck your chin in to protect it with your punching hand during the strike.

Step 3. Generate Power with Your Hips and Core.

Step 3

Generate power with your hips and core. As you initiate the punch, rotate your hips and core toward the target. Try to position yourself so that the rotation is as complete as possible, even if you're very close to the target. Your punch will be stronger if you can rotate fully instead of just shifting slightly. When you punch, you should really feel the weight of your body.

  • During your punching training, pay attention to your hips. Rotate them quickly and powerfully toward the target as if you were going to hit it with your hips, not just your fist. This will help build the strength needed for a hard and fast punch.
  • While rotating, there's no need to lean forward or reach for the target. If you have to stretch to hit the target, you'll lose power.

Step 4. Extend Your Arm Forward.

Step 4

Extend your arm forward. Your shoulders should remain relaxed until you're ready to punch. When you're prepared, thrust your arm forward to easily reach the person you're hitting. Keep your arm relaxed until it starts moving, then clench it into a fist to deliver a powerful strike.

  • To form a fist, squeeze all four fingers except the thumb and wrap them with the thumb last. Make sure the thumb is bent back; otherwise, it may get caught in your punch.
  • Pre-tensioning your hand will help you avoid injuries and make your punch stronger.
  • Don't telegraph your punch before throwing it; otherwise, your opponent will read your intentions before you strike. This is called
