What are dreams? Are they merely the workings of our brain, or is there something more profound at play? Perhaps dreams open doors to other realms, where the past, present, and future coexist, offering us limitless possibilities. Shamanism is an ancient art that places great significance on dreams. Shamans embark on mystical journeys, utilizing dreams, hallucinogenic substances, and trance to access healing wisdom, communicate with spirits, and explore the souls of the living. By applying shamanic dreaming practices, we can gain insights through our dreams.
Unlocking the Door to Shamanic Messages
Step 1. Visit Your Local Bookstore.

Head to your nearest bookstore. Look for literature on shamanic practices and beliefs. In ancient times, shamans journeyed into the spirit world to seek answers to pressing questions. Upon entering the store, open your heart. You've already taken the first step on your shamanic journey. What knowledge might you uncover?
- Did you learn something new?
- Did you connect with someone interesting?
- Did you notice anything unusual?
- If you dream of this bookstore, try to enter it in your dream.
Step 2. Seek Evidence.

Look for confirmations. Shamans believe that the universe is alive, possesses its own consciousness, and that everything, including inanimate objects, has a soul. Start paying attention to signs of shamanic beliefs in your everyday life. Does your coffee grinder seem to have a soul? Does a butterfly that flew into your home remind you of someone? Do you feel a connection with the plant in your office? Pay attention to your feelings—this could be the beginning of your path to shamanic dreaming.
- Start your day by greeting the objects and animals around you.
- Say (either mentally or out loud): "Hello, coffee grinder! Thank you for making my morning better."
- The more you seek confirmations, the easier it will become to continue practicing lucid dreaming.
Step 3. Learn to Recognize Synchronicity.

Learn to notice synchronicity. In this life, almost nothing happens by chance. By paying attention to synchronicities in your real life, you'll begin to understand messages from the Universe. If you often encounter examples of synchronicity, it's a sign you're on the right path. Synchronicity can indicate what is worth focusing on or where to go in your dreams. Here are some examples:
- Meeting the same person in different locations.
- Coinciding phrases spoken simultaneously with someone else.
- When you experience synchronicity, don't ignore that feeling. Stop and give that moment your full attention. Write down your thoughts.
- Pay attention to synchronicity at the boundary between wakefulness and sleep. For example, if you met someone in real life and then see them in a dream, try to talk to them in the dream!
Step 4. Play in the "Twilight Zone."

Play in the "Twilight Zone." Begin your journey into shamanic dreaming by playing with the state between sleep and wakefulness, known as the "twilight zone." Lying in bed and preparing for sleep, direct your thoughts and imagination toward places suitable for shamanic activities. You are already laying the groundwork for this!
- Remember the bookstore. Who did you interact with? Mentally call these people to mind and imagine them giving you advice. Picture yourself entering the store—it may be an entrance to a new level.
- Recall all the "evidence" you encountered. Remember the coffee grinder that seemed alive. Listen to what it might be saying to you. What would it want to convey?
- Reflect on all the examples of synchronicity you’ve experienced. Recall them in vivid detail. Can you relive that experience in your dreams?
- A classic technique is to visualize a staircase. Imagine it in as much detail as possible. Gradually, as you sink into sleep, picture yourself climbing it. This can help you transition to a new level.
- Finally, think about what you want to learn. At the boundary between sleep and wakefulness, ask yourself questions about yourself, your future, or your ancestors.
Step 5. Pay Attention to Symbols.

Learn to notice symbols. To gain the full wisdom of shamanic dreaming, it’s essential to understand the language of dreams. Start tracking symbols: simply write them down and pay attention to recurring motifs. In shamanic dreaming, there are two types of symbols.
- Archetypal symbols are images that transcend time and culture. These can include elements (water, air, earth, fire), celestial bodies (sun, moon, stars), or animals (tigers, bears, reptiles).
- Personal symbols are those that hold particular significance for you, your family, or your life experiences. For example, lightning might symbolize power for you if you saw it strike your grandfather in a dream.
- Sometimes symbols can be both personal and archetypal. Higher powers may communicate with you through symbols that are familiar to you. If you follow a particular religion, symbols from that faith may appear in your dreams.
Step 6. Track Your Dreams on Three Levels.

Track your dreams on three levels. There are three levels of dreaming or three dream worlds. Gradually determine which level you are in. Do you prefer a specific level? Do you notice transitions between them?
- The upper level is associated with intellectual and spiritual knowledge. At this level, you may see libraries, clear skies, and sunlight.
- The middle level is where most dreams occur. It is closely tied to the real world and is less interesting to shamans.
- The lower level (or journey level) is filled with ancient knowledge, nature, and animals.
- If you already know which level you most frequently dream at, you can set goals for acquiring specific knowledge.
Practice "Awakening" in Dreams
Step 1. Regularly Check Reality.

Frequently check reality. To utilize shamanic wisdom from your dreams, you need to "wake up" (or realize that you are dreaming) during a dream. This means you must be aware that you are asleep while continuing to sleep. One of the simplest ways to achieve this is to regularly ask yourself whether you are dreaming.
- By constantly asking yourself if you are dreaming, you will learn to do this even in your dreams.
- When you ask yourself this question in a dream, you will realize that you are dreaming and can achieve lucidity in the dream.
- Lucid dreaming is a vital step toward shamanic dreaming.
Step 2. Learn to Recognize Signs in Your Dreams.

Learn how to recognize signs in your dreams. There are several indicators that you are dreaming, and some of them are common among most people. Over time, you will understand which signs are specific to you. These signs will help you achieve lucidity in your dreams.
- Clocks, phones, and other devices in dreams often malfunction.
- Your hands may look strange in dreams.
- Your reflection in a mirror may be distorted if it’s a dream.
- At any moment, when encountering such things, ask yourself: "Am I dreaming or awake?"
Step 3. Use Audio Stimulation.

Try audio stimulation. Shamans traditionally used drums to enter altered states of consciousness. You can do the same by listening to binaural beats while you sleep.
- Binaural beats are audio recordings that you can listen to through headphones. These recordings use sounds of different frequencies.
- Binaural beats often induce a meditative state and promote lucid dreaming.
Step 4. Learn to Interpret Shamanic Symbols.

Master the art of interpreting shamanic symbols. Once you learn to "wake up" in your dreams, it's time for deeper messages. Previously, you sought and recognized personal and archetypal symbols in your dreams. Now, you will need to learn to interpret their meanings.
- For example, if you saw lightning strike your grandfather, lightning may hold significant meaning. If your grandfather inspires you, it symbolizes inspiration. If you were frightened by it, lightning may symbolize fear or a warning.
- Lightning can be an archetypal symbol connected to gods in various cultures. It may signify divine punishment or the loss of innocence.
- Pay attention to your feelings when you see lightning in a dream. These emotions will help you understand the symbol’s significance.
- Try to interpret symbols right after waking up. Over time, you will learn to do this even in your dreams.
Step 5. Identify the Level of Your Dream.

Identify the level of your dream. Remember the three levels of dreaming? When you learn to be aware in your dreams, identify which level you are in.
- If you are at the middle level, look for a door, passage, or stairs. If you find a portal, follow it—this can lead you to the upper or lower level.
- If you are at the upper level, seek messages about your connection to the divine, the pursuit of knowledge, or life after death. At this level, you may see your ancestors.
- If you are at the lower level, look for messages about primal existence. Here, you can learn about your desires and needs, as well as communicate with animals or unborn children.
Remember Your Dreams
Step 1. Ensure Adequate Sleep.

Get more sleep. To master the art of shamanic dreaming, you must learn to remember them. The first step is to allocate enough time for sleep. Dreams increase in duration during the night, allowing you to capture more important details.
- The first dream is usually the shortest, but after 8 hours of sleep, dreams can last 45 minutes or more.
- Morning dreams are especially valuable from a shamanic perspective.
Step 2. Keep a Dream Journal.

Record your dreams. Do you retain memories of your dreams after waking, or do they fade quickly? Keep a pen and paper nearby to jot down your thoughts immediately upon waking. This offers dual benefits:
- You will learn to remember your dreams better, and soon you won’t need to write them down.
- The records will help you analyze your dreams and better understand shamanic wisdom.
Step 3. Start Meditating.

Practice meditation. Regular meditation will help relax your mind, making it easier to transition into the world of dreams and enhance dream recall.
- You can achieve a meditative state through guided meditations (videos or audio) and binaural beats.
- If you don’t enjoy guided meditation, simply sit quietly for 5-10 minutes, focusing on your breath and taking deep inhales.
- For greater effectiveness, meditate daily or at least every other day.
Step 4. Avoid Alcohol Before Sleep.

Refrain from alcohol before bedtime. Consuming alcohol reduces dream time and their vividness.
- If you have the opportunity to sleep in the morning, this can help you see and remember dreams, but alcohol may hinder your body’s recovery during the morning hours.
Step 5. Use Positive Affirmations.

Employ affirmations for a positive mindset. Before you go to sleep, tell yourself: "I always remember my dreams." Repeat this every time before sleeping to set your mind for lucid dreaming and shamanic symbolism. Over time, you will indeed be able to remember your dreams.
