Want to transfer your favorite music files from your iPod to your computer? In this article, we’ll guide you through the process on both Windows and Mac, using the free Sharepod program for most iPod models or the standard tools iTunes and File Explorer/Finder for older models.

Using Sharepod

Step 1. Enable File Sharing in iTunes

Before you begin, make sure that file sharing is enabled in iTunes. While Sharepod does not interact directly with iTunes, the presence of iTunes is necessary for proper operation:

  • Launch iTunes;
  • Click on "Edit" (for Windows) or "iTunes" (for Mac) in the top left corner;
  • Select "Preferences";
  • Go to the "Advanced" tab;
  • Check the box next to "Share iTunes Library XML with other applications";
  • Click "OK".

Step 2. Visit the Sharepod Website

Open your browser and go to the Sharepod website at https://www.getsharepod.com/download/. This free software for Windows and Mac OS X will help you copy audio files from your iPod to your computer.

  • Sharepod supports the latest iPod models, including iPod Touch and iPod Classic.

Step 3. Download Sharepod

Click on "Download for Windows" or "Download for Mac" at the top of the page to download the installer.

Step 4. Install Sharepod

The installation process for Sharepod varies slightly depending on the operating system:

  • Windows: Double-click the downloaded file and follow the on-screen instructions. If prompted to install QuickTime, agree to do so.
  • Mac: Double-click the DMG file, drag the Sharepod icon to the "Applications" folder, and follow the instructions. You may need to allow the installation in your security settings.

Step 5. Enable Disk Mode on iPod

For iPods other than the Touch model, enable disk mode for the computer to recognize the device. The method for activation depends on the model:

  • iPod Nano 6th or 7th Generation: Press and hold the "Sleep/Wake" button and the "Home" button (for the 7th generation) or the volume down button (for the 6th); hold until you see the Apple logo, then hold the volume up and down buttons until the disk mode screen appears.
  • iPod with Click Wheel: Unlock the hold switch, then press and hold the menu and center button until the Apple logo appears. Hold the center button and play button until the disk mode screen opens.
  • iPod with Touch Wheel: Similar to the previous one, turn the hold switch on and off, then hold the menu and play buttons until you see the Apple logo, and then hold the back and forward buttons until the screen opens.
  • iPod Classic: Disk mode is not required to connect to a computer.

Step 6. Connect iPod to Computer

Connect your iPod to your computer by plugging one end of the charging cable into the iPod and the other into a USB port.

  • For Mac, you may need a USB3.0–USB/C adapter if standard USB ports are not available.

Step 7. Launch Sharepod

Double-click the Sharepod icon to open the program.

  • Sharepod may automatically launch immediately after installation.

Step 8. Click on "Done"

When prompted, click "Done". The main Sharepod window will open.

  • During this time, iTunes (if it was closed) will also open, and the program should be running in the background while you work with Sharepod.

Step 9. Select the Music Files You Need

Hold down the Ctrl key (for Windows) or ⌘ Command key (for Mac) and click on each song you want.

  • If you want to copy all music, proceed to the next step.

Step 10. Specify a Folder on Your Computer

After selecting the music, click "Transfer" in the bottom right corner, choose "Transfer selected to a folder", specify a folder on your computer, and click "OK".

  • To copy all songs, select "Transfer" > "Transfer everything to a folder".

Step 11. Click "Go"

Click the green "Go" button in the bottom right corner. The music files will be copied from your iPod to the specified folder.

Transferring Music from Older iPod Models to Windows

Step 1. Important Note

This method does not work for iPod Touch. Older models, such as iPod Nano and iPod with click wheel, use a simpler music storage format.

  • To transfer music from iPod Touch, use Sharepod.

Step 2. Launch iTunes

Double-click the iTunes icon (the colorful note).

  • If a notification for an update appears, click "Update" and restart your computer if necessary.
  • If you don’t have iTunes, download and install the program.

Step 3. Configure iTunes

Change the iTunes settings to prevent errors and accidental file overwrites:

  • Click "Edit";
  • Select "Preferences";
  • Go to the "Devices" tab;
  • Check the box for "Prevent iPods, iPhones, and iPads from syncing automatically";
  • Go to the "Advanced" tab;
  • Check the boxes for "Keep iTunes Media folder organized" and "Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library";
  • Click "OK".

Step 4. Enable Disk Mode on iPod

Follow the same step-by-step instructions for enabling disk mode as described above.

Step 5. Connect iPod to Computer

Connect your iPod to your computer using the charging cable.

Step 6. Wait for the iPod Icon to Appear in iTunes

Step 7. Open File Explorer

Click on the Windows logo in the bottom left corner of the screen.

Step 8. Launch the File Explorer Window

Click on the folder icon in the Start menu.

Step 9. Locate Your iPod

Click on your iPod name in the left pane of the File Explorer window; scroll down if you do not see it.

  • If you can't find the iPod name, click on "This PC", then double-click on the iPod name in the "Devices and drives" section.

Step 10. Show Hidden Folders

In the "View" tab at the top of the window, check the box for "Hidden items" to see the iPod folders.

Step 11. Open the "iPod_Control" Folder

Double-click the "iPod_Control" folder.

Step 12. Open the "Music" Folder

Inside the "iPod_Control" folder, open the "Music" folder, where you'll see many folders with names like "F00", "F01", and so on.

Step 13. Select All Folders in "Music"

Click on any folder in "Music", then use Ctrl+A to select all folders.

Step 14. Copy the Folders

Press Ctrl+C to copy.

Step 15. Paste the Folders to Your Hard Drive

Go to the folder on your computer where you want to save the music, and press Ctrl+V to paste.

Step 16. Add Music to iTunes

After copying the music files, add them to iTunes:

  • Launch iTunes;
  • Select "File";
  • Click "Add Folder to Library";
  • Locate the folder with audio files and click "Select Folder";
  • The music will be added to "iTunes Media"; you can now delete the folder with the music files.

Transferring Music from Older iPod Models to Mac OS X

Step 1. Important Note

This method also does not work for iPod Touch. Older models store music in a more convenient format.

  • To transfer music from iPod Touch, use Sharepod.

Step 2. Launch iTunes

Click on the iTunes icon in the dock.

  • If a notification for an update appears, agree to it and restart your computer if necessary.
  • If you don’t have iTunes, install the program.

Step 3. Configure iTunes

Make changes to the iTunes settings:

  • Click "iTunes" in the top left corner;
  • Select "Preferences";
  • Go to the "Devices" tab;
  • Check the box for "Prevent iPods, iPhones, and iPads from syncing automatically";
  • Go to the "Advanced" tab;
  • Check the boxes for "Keep iTunes Media folder organized" and "Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library";
  • Click "OK".

Step 4. Enable Disk Mode on iPod

The process is similar to that described above for Windows.

Step 5. Show Hidden Folders

To do this, open Spotlight in the top right corner and follow these steps:

  • Type "terminal";
  • Double-click on "Terminal";
  • Enter: defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles -boolean true; killall Finder ;
  • Press ⏎ Return.

Step 6. Connect iPod to Computer

Use the charging cable for the connection.

  • For Mac, you may need a USB3.0–USB/C adapter.

Step 7. Wait for the iPod Icon to Appear in iTunes

Step 8. Open Finder

Click on the blue face icon in your dock.

Step 9. Locate Your iPod

In the bottom left corner of the Finder window, find your iPod name. If you don’t see it, click "Computer" and double-click your iPod name.

Step 10. Open the "iPod_Control" Folder

Double-click the "iPod_Control" folder.

Step 11. Open the "Music" Folder

Inside "iPod_Control", find the "Music" folder, where you will find folders with similar names.

Step 12. Select All Folders Inside "Music"

Click on any folder in "Music", then use ⌘ Command+A to select all.

Step 13. Copy the Folders

Press ⌘ Command+C to copy.

Step 14. Paste the Folders to Your Hard Drive

Go to the folder on your computer and press ⌘ Command+V to paste the songs.

After copying the files, add them to iTunes:

  • Launch iTunes;
  • Select "File";
  • Click "Add to Library";
  • Specify the folder with audio files;
  • Click "Open".
